March 18th: Suffolk University, Emerson College, and Boston University

 Suffolk University:

Suffolk was definitely one of the most elegant universities out of all the places I’ve visited. The interiors were hotel-like, with golden elevators and high ceilings. Initially from the experience from yesterday, I imagined all the campus buildings to be very spread out. But surprisingly, they were all pretty close, less than a few minutes apart.  Originally a law school, the school now offers majors in all subjects.

What stood out most to me was its security system. There is a constant Suffolk police patrol that keeps students safe and an application that can allow you to request to walk with a police officer to the station or to any nearby places. It also includes a GPS system where the police can know your location and keep the students safe.

Overall Suffolk University is one of the universities that I might consider applying to in the future because of its beautiful facility and assured safety. It also has a variety of clubs which would be very engaging.

Emerson College:

Before I went to Emerson College, I had the impression that it was strong in theater and film. While that was true, it easily exceeded my expectations. I was really surprised when I saw one of the theaters. I had expected it to be the biggest one, but it wasn’t. Still, I was amazed by how well-equipped it was, with proper lighting, seating, and screens. They also had authentic broadcast studios and equipment. I also found it very impressive that Emerson has eight theaters and hosts around 80 student performances each year. That felt memorable and unique—something I think can only be experienced at Emerson.  They have very strong film, television, and news and broadcasting programs as well as literature majors in writing and publishing.

I also felt that Emerson values traveling and gaining experiences in different places. The study abroad opportunities stood out to me, such as short-term programs, the Castle Well program in the Netherlands, and domestic programs. I was especially impressed by our student guide Paige’s experience in Los Angeles and how several companies were scouting her. That gave me the sense that Emerson has strong connections outside of campus as well.

The most memorable aspect for me was Emerson’s focus on creativity. For example, I thought it was really interesting that students can learn the fundamentals of business while also exploring how to start their own companies. Additionally, providing Adobe software for free is a great benefit and students can also borrow any equipment they need. Since I use Adobe quite often, I understand how valuable it is as a tool for expanding creativity. It was a great visit.

Boston University:

Visiting was a lifetime experience. The first thing I noticed about the university is how massive it is, regardless of the location, being in the city of Boston. Everywhere you look, there were BU campus buildings which were beautifully designed. Furthermore, our tour guide was a very friendly, positive student who had friends everywhere we went, which made me consider that students in this university are friendly and well connected.

The best part of this university experience for me was that there are over 100 majors and every campus location is dedicated to one of these different majors. The main symbolic building for Boston University is known as the Jenga building and it focuses on data science. It looks like Jenga blocks and is an architectural marvel.  The CAS building focuses on Art and science. Having a lot of departments gives students lots of opportunities and supports them on what majors to focus on.  Martin Luther King Jr. once studied here and there is a monument to him at the school.

Today we visited Boston University, and I was very satisfied with its facilities, especially the newly built computing and information building. The convenience of having direct access to downtown via the Green Line is also a major advantage. In addition, since the university has strong programs in information technology and I am interested in a related major, it is definitely a school worth considering.
